AmeriGroup Braces For Massive Damages Award

Law360, New York (December 6, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Weeks after a jury first ordered Amerigroup Corp. to pay $144 million for discriminating against pregnant women and other high-risk patients, the health insurance company has revealed it could be asked to shell out a whopping $525 million instead.

On Tuesday, the embattled insurer said in an SEC filing that the damages award could be more than tripled, if plaintiffs are able to succeed in their quest to impose civil penalties and assess attorneys' fees, costs and expenses.
