Caterpillar, Holt Hit With $56M Verdict In Injury Suit

Law360, New York (January 29, 2010, 4:59 PM ET) -- A Texas jury has awarded more than $56 million in damages to a man who claims he was paralyzed while operating a wheel tractor scraper made by Caterpillar Inc. as a result of the company's defective design and negligence.

The jury in the Bexar County District Court in San Antonio awarded Alfonzo Lopez $15.7 million in actual damages and $40.5 million in punitive damages Thursday against Caterpillar and its distributor Holt Texas Ltd., Lopez's attorney Mark Lanier said Friday.
