House Probes Controversial Gas Drilling Process

Law360, New York (February 18, 2010, 5:53 PM ET) -- The House Energy and Commerce Committee has opened an investigation into whether the oil and natural gas extraction process known as hydraulic fracturing may lead to environmental and public health problems.

Committee chairman Henry A. Waxman, D-Calif., on Thursday sent letters to Halliburton Co., BJ Services Co., Schlumberger Ltd. and five smaller companies seeking to obtain more information about whether chemicals used in fracturing fluids could contaminate drinking water and pose health risks.
