Diocese Sets Aside $75M For Abuse Claims

Law360, New York (December 19, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portland, Ore. filed a reorganization plan Monday that, if approved, would pay $74.5 million to settle at least 169 child molestation cases.

Thus far, 143 claims against the archdiocese have already been settled for $40.7 million. However, the reorganization plan also sets aside $13.75 million for 26 unresolved claims, plus $20 million for any future claims.

Insurance companies will pay $51.75 million of that money, while the rest will come from archdiocesan assets and loans, according to court documents.
