Justice John Paul Stevens Announces Retirement

Law360, New York (April 09, 2010, 11:56 AM ET) -- Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, the longest-serving member of the U.S. Supreme Court, on Friday announced his intention to resign his position at the end of the current court term, ending months of speculation.

In a letter sent to President Barack Obama, Justice Stevens said his decision to retire came after he “concluded that it would be in the best interests of the court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the court's next term.”
