Toyota Pays DOT $16.4M Penalty Over Recall Delays

Law360, New York (April 19, 2010, 3:51 PM EDT) -- Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to pay a $16.4 million civil penalty — the maximum possible — for failing to notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the now notorious “sticky pedal” defects.

Toyota’s $16.38 million fine is the largest penalty ever assed on an automaker, the U.S. Department of Transportation said Monday. The fine also covers Toyota’s response to “slow to return” pedal defects, it said.
