European Union Joins WIPO's Madrid Protocol

Law360, New York (June 21, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Community has acceded to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Madrid Protocol on the international registration of trademarks.

The European Union had been negotiating to join for at least seven years, but technical provisions made the process difficult. Those provisions were resolved last year, allowing the Council of Ministers to formally approve membership of the system in November.
