Judge Won't Let Fired Lawyer Exit Stanford Case

Law360, New York (June 2, 2010, 11:05 AM EDT) -- A federal judge, apparently tired of frequent lawyer-switching by accused $7 billion Ponzi schemer Robert Allen Stanford, has refused to let the latest fired advocate leave the case.

Judge David Hittner's one-page ruling, handed down Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, denied lead attorney Michael M. Essmyer's motion to withdraw from the case.

The judge did, however, grant Essmyer's request to substitute Houston-based criminal attorney Robert S. Bennett of the firm Bennett Nguyen Joint Venture as lead counsel.
