Gibson Drops 'Guitar Hero,' 'Rock Band' Patent Suit

Law360, New York (June 11, 2010, 7:07 PM EDT) -- Video game developer Harmonix Music Systems Inc., Viacom International Inc. and a slew of major retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have settled Gibson Guitar Corp.’s lawsuit alleging the “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero” video games violate a Gibson patent for a virtual reality music system.

On Friday, Judge Thomas Wiseman of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee signed off on the settlement and dismissed the case, noting all parties will bear their own costs for the two-plus years of litigation.
