NLRB To Examine Newspaper’s E-Mail Policy

Law360, New York (January 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The National Labor Relations Board will soon decide whether employees have the right to use their employer’s e-mail systems to spread information about union activities.

The dispute in question, between the Register-Guard, a daily newspaper in Eugene, Ore. with circulation of 70,000, and its union, the Eugene Newspaper Guild, has been ongoing for some time now.

It started when the Register-Guard’s publisher, the Guard Publishing Co., established a rule against the use of computer resources for “non-job related solicitations.”
