Italy Illegally Blocked Autostrade-Abertis Deal: E.C.

Law360, New York (January 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Union’s antitrust watchdog stepped up its campaign against the Italian government Wednesday, saying it broke E.U. law when it sabotaged a foreign takeover of Italy’s top toll-road operator.

The European Commission gave Rome a deadline of 15 working days to respond to its “preliminary” finding that Italy wrongfully blocked Spain’s Abertis Infraestructuras SA from taking over Italian rival Autostrade SpA.
