International Paper Hit With 'Ecotainer' Patent Suit

Law360, New York (July 15, 2010, 4:25 PM ET) -- The University of Massachusetts and a small bioscience company have decided to challenge pulp and paper giant International Paper Co., saying their patent is being infringed by its compostable Ecotainer products.

UMass and Metabolix Inc. — which focuses on providing sustainable alternatives to plastics, chemicals and fossil fuels — lodged a sparse, four-page patent infringement complaint Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. A summons went out to International Paper the following day.
