FAA Allowed Northwest To Flout Safety Rules: DOT

Law360, New York (July 23, 2010, 6:01 PM EDT) -- The Federal Aviation Administration failed to hold Northwest Airlines Inc. accountable for compliance with safety standards even after the carrier repeatedly ignored federal rules, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Responding to whistleblower allegations, the department's inspector general's office found that the government had failed to provide effective oversight of Northwest and to address the airline's systemic noncompliance with FAA airworthiness directives, according to the report, released Thursday.
