Wis. AG Urges Narrow Read Of Public Record Ruling

Law360, New York (July 28, 2010, 3:36 PM EDT) -- Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said Wednesday that custodians of public records should narrowly apply a recent Wisconsin Supreme Court decision exempting public employees' personal e-mails from disclosure even when the e-mails are sent from government accounts.

In an open memorandum on the impact of the ruling, Van Hollen reminded records keepers and anyone seeking access to public records that people are “entitled to the greatest possible information regarding the affairs of government,” he said, citing the state's public records law.
