US Legislators Urge Japan To Widen Clunkers Program

Law360, New York (August 10, 2010, 5:04 PM EDT) -- Forty members of the U.S. House of Representatives have urged Japan's trade minister to let U.S. automakers participate in the Asian nation's equivalent of the Cash for Clunkers program, saying American cars are being unfairly shut out.

Japanese Trade Minister Masayuki Naoshima should amend the program rules to allow U.S. automakers to participate for the sake of trade fairness, the group said Tuesday in an open letter authored by Rep. Gary Peters, D-Mich., who represents a district heavily dependent on the auto sector.
