House Legislators Call For Medicare Fraud Crackdown

Law360, New York (September 22, 2010, 4:33 PM EDT) -- A Republican congressman from Illinois and a Democrat from Florida pushed for the passage of separate bills Wednesday that would fight Medicare and Medicaid fraud, with one of the measures doubling criminal penalties for making false statements and taking kickbacks.

Rep. Ron Klein, D-Fla., told a subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce that the Medicare Fraud Enforcement and Prevention Act, or H.R. 5044, would usher in a new approach to prosecuting Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
