Iowa City Settles False Ambulance Claims Case For $5M

Law360, New York (September 23, 2010, 1:50 PM EDT) -- An Iowa city has agreed to pay $4.5 million to settle a whistleblower's False Claims Act allegations that its fire department overbilled Medicaid and Medicare by categorizing medical services provided during ambulance calls as far more serious than they really were.

Judge Charles R. Wolle of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa on Wednesday signed off on a motion to dismiss after the whistleblower, Timothy C. Schultheis, and the city of Clinton reached a deal on Sept. 17 to end the case....
