E.U. Called On To Adopt Sanctions In Climate Pact

Law360, New York (March 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A European Union leader has called on the European Commission to penalize member states that fail to meet greenhouse gas emissions targets.

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-leader of the European Parliament’s Green Party questioned how the E.U.’s global warming pact could work if sanctions are not considered.

E.U. leaders last week agreed to an ambitious set of measures to reduce global warming far and beyond current Kyoto Protocol levels. But divisions over how to reach that goal are already threatening to derail the newly formed pact.
