High-Tech Fuels Surge In Asian Patent Filings

Law360, New York (August 27, 2004, 12:00 AM ET) -- A surge in patent filings by consumer electronics companies such as Sony, Matsushita and Samsung is fueling a dramatic rise in Asian international patent applications, statistics from the World Intellectual Property Organization reveal.

In the first half of the year, Chinese filings grew by 26.6%, followed by Japanese filings at 23.5% and Korean filings at 17.1%. By comparison, international patent applications grew at a much more tepid rate of about 4.0% on average, the monthly statistics from the United Nation’s intellectual property body show.
