Senators Question Sirius, XM Merger

Law360, New York (March 20, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Competition from sources such as broadcasting and downloaded music should mitigate concerns about the anti-competitive effects of a proposed merger between Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., media executives told U.S. senators on Tuesday.

Senator Herb Kohl, who chairs the an antitrust subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, lobbed hard questions at Mel Karmazin, the CEO of Sirius, during a congressional hearing on the merger, saying that he thought a combination of the two companies would likely be a monopoly.
