McDermott To Offset Taxes For Gay Domestic Partners

Law360, New York (December 10, 2010, 3:03 PM EST) -- McDermott Will & Emery LLP has announced it will compensate gay employees for the extra federal taxes they pay on benefits for same-sex domestic partners, following in the footsteps of other high-profile employers such as Google Inc. and Barclays Bank PLC.

The firm's so-called tax gross-up payment will eliminate the federal tax inequity on benefits that gay and lesbian employees face, McDermott said when it announced the new perk Thursday. The policy is set to begin Jan. 1, the firm said.
