New Bill Focuses On Nuclear Safety

Law360, New York (March 29, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., introduced legislation Wednesday that would require nuclear power plants to undergo independent safety assessments before boosting their output or extending their operating licenses.

If the bill becomes law, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would be forced to conduct a safety review each time a utility applies to extend its license for an aging plant or proposes to generate more power than a reactor was originally designed to produce.
