Pa. Health Insurers’ Merger Stirs Antitrust Concerns

Law360, New York (March 29, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Days after two Pittsburgh hospital drew antitrust scrutiny over plans for a $120 million proposed union, Pennsylvania legislators are now eyeing a plan by the state's top health insurers to merge.

Independence Blue Cross of Philadelphia and Highmark Inc. of Pittsburgh said Wednesday that their boards of directors had approved a merger that would create the third-largest health insurer in the nation behind UnitedHealth Group of Minneapolis and Wellpoint Inc. of Indianapolis.
