USTR Prods Congress To Pass Korea Trade Pact By July

Law360, New York (January 13, 2011, 3:56 PM EST) -- The Obama administration's top trade official on Thursday urged Congress to quickly approve a free trade deal with South Korea so that it's in place by the time Europe's agreement with the Asian economic powerhouse goes into effect in July.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk expressed hope that Capitol Hill lawmakers would take that step in a speech Thursday to Washington think tank Third Way.

The U.S.-Korea deal, announced Dec. 3, still faces opposition, especially from U.S. autoworkers, who have powerful allies in Congress.
