USDA Kicks Off Biobased Labeling System

Law360, New York (January 20, 2011, 12:16 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture BioPreferred Program's new voluntary certification and labeling system to identify biobased products made from renewable resources went into effect Thursday, aiming to help consumers and federal agencies identify and buy the more eco-friendly goods.

The newly finalized rule, published in the Federal Register Thursday, will permit the makers and distributors of biobased products — composed wholly or significantly of renewable plant, animal, marine or forestry materials — to submit for USDA certification and label any products meeting the minimum biobased ingredient...
