Massey Blast Caused By Dust, Faulty Equipment: Feds

Law360, New York (January 20, 2011, 4:39 PM EST) -- Federal officials have said that an April explosion at a Massey Energy Co. coal mine that killed 29 workers was likely caused by coal dust that ignited after a methane gas leak caused a fire.

U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration Assistant Secretary Joseph Main described the preliminary findings of the ongoing government probe into the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County, W.Va., in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday.

Main said the MSHA has interviewed 261 people in its investigation...
