St. Jude To Pay $16M To Settle FCA Suit

Law360, New York (January 21, 2011, 6:09 PM EST) -- St. Jude Medical Inc. has agreed to pay $16 million to settle a civil suit brought by a former employee that accused the company of operating a kickback scheme to boost use of its pacemakers and defibrillators.

The settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, announced Thursday, ends a lawsuit that alleges the St. Paul, Minn.-based heart device manufacturer used post-market studies and a device registry as vehicles to pay physicians to use its products.
