Behind Closed Doors: Hurdles Juries Face

Law360, New York (February 24, 2011, 1:42 PM EST) -- The closing arguments are done. The judge has read the instructions to the jury. The “triers-of-fact” are headed to the jury room to deliberate. Only they know exactly what happens after that, but it’s not always blissful, lucid and harmonious.

Dazed and Confused

Jurors couldn’t find unanimity on much in the first trial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, but all agreed that their task was exceedingly confusing. As juror Steve Wlodek put it, “It was like, ‘Here’s a manual, go fly the space shuttle.’”...
