US, Mexico To Share Patent Info On Trial Basis

Law360, New York (February 28, 2011, 2:08 PM EST) -- Mexico will join England, Japan and a dozen other nations whose intellectual property offices cooperate with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to expedite and simplify patent applications across borders, the agency announced Friday.

The one-year Patent Prosecution Highway project trial program with Mexico’s Institute of Industrial Property, or IMPI, will begin Tuesday, the USPTO said, and could be expanded for an additional year or scrapped early.

If the trial period goes well, the countries’ patent offices may enter into a permanent agreement.
