Hollywood Cos. Agree To Alter Theater Contracts In EU

Law360, New York (March 4, 2011, 2:00 PM EST) -- The European Commission on Friday closed an antitrust investigation into major U.S. film studios over contracts for the installation of digital projection equipment in movie theaters, after Hollywood heavyweights agreed to make changes so smaller distributors wouldn't be shut out.

The regulator had feared smaller film distributors might have limited access to digital projection-equipped cinemas under contract provisions stipulating third-party financiers had to offer big studios the same fee rates as smaller studios, which could be a breach of EU competition rules.
