Outstanding Women: Melanie Cyganowski

Law360, New York (April 19, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In many ways, Melanie Cyganowski has already lived nine lives, traveling a long road from anthropologist to chief bankruptcy judge for the Eastern District of New York over the past 30 years.

Back in college at Grinnell, anthropology seemed like the ideal marriage of her interests, offering a combination of history and economics as well as social and cultural elements.

“I was not interested in anthropology from afar,” she said. She preferred to study urban areas and go directly into neighborhoods.
