EU Court Adviser Says French Crop Ban Is Illegal

Law360, New York (March 22, 2011, 11:01 PM EDT) -- A legal adviser to the European Court of Justice reportedly issued an opinion Tuesday determining that France broke the law when it banned the planting of Missouri-based Monsanto Co.’s genetically modified maize without requesting European Union health and environmental safeguards.

Paolo Mengozzi, the court's advocate general, wrote that before France imposed the ban, it should have asked the EU to adopt emergency measures, according to a report by Agence France Presse.
