DOT Chief Calls For New Pipeline Safety Measures

Law360, New York (April 4, 2011, 5:55 PM EDT) -- Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Monday unveiled a broad initiative to improve the safety of the U.S.’ pipeline infrastructure, calling for increased oversight in the wake of several deadly pipeline accidents.

Citing a series of recent accidents, including a Feb. 9 pipeline explosion in Pennsylvania that killed five, LaHood said he had asked Congress for authorization to close regulatory gaps, boost risk-management requirements, add inspectors and step up scrutiny of pipeline safety.
