Alpha Gets Antitrust Clearance For $7.1B Massey Buy

Law360, New York (April 04, 2011, 7:38 PM ET) -- Alpha Natural Resources Inc. on Saturday said it had cleared all antitrust obstacles in its $7.1 billion offer to purchase Massey Energy Co., putting the companies one step closer to finalizing the deal.

The waiting period required under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act has expired, and the Virginia-based companies received the necessary foreign antitrust approvals, they said in a statement.

The deal could close as early as mid-2011, but shareholders of both companies must still approve the transaction.
