Calif. Court Reverses Fee Award In RJ Reynolds Ad Row

Law360, New York (April 5, 2011, 5:30 PM EDT) -- A California appeals court on Tuesday granted R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. a reprieve from paying $700,000 in attorneys' fees in a dispute with the state, which alleged the tobacco giant violated a 1998 settlement agreement by using cartoons in ads.

The Court of Appeal of the State of California, Fourth Appellate District, remanded the case to a trial court, saying that court used the wrong legal standard to determine R.J. Reynolds was on the hook for the state's attorneys' fees.
