US Gov't Averts Shutdown With 11th-Hour Deal

Law360, New York (April 8, 2011, 7:23 PM EDT) -- U.S. lawmakers reached a last-minute deal late Friday to continue funding the federal government through the end of the fiscal year, narrowly avoiding a shutdown for which agencies had been preparing.

Congressional leaders announced just hours before midnight that they had agreed to a compromise spending bill that would knock more than $78 billion off of the funding levels requested by President Barack Obama for fiscal year 2011, while abandoning most of the policy demands made by Republicans.
