Gulf Drilling Permits: A Saga In 3 Acts

Law360, New York (April 21, 2011, 1:30 PM EDT) -- A year ago this month, the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform experienced a catastrophic blowout and loss of well control. The past year saw the U.S. Department of the Interior, through its Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE), impose back-to-back moratoria suspending deepwater permitting and drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Although the most recent moratorium was lifted in October 2010, only a few permits and exploration plans have been approved since then.
