Lawmakers, Unions Fight FDA Plan To Close Labs

Law360, New York (May 4, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a continued effort by lawmakers, labor unions and advocates to stop the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from closing six of its 13 field laboratories, two senators have proposed an amendment that would halt the plan until a study looks at the possible impacts.

The FDA’s plan to reorganize its Office of Regulatory Affairs, which would include consolidating field labs into seven “mega-labs” by 2009, has drawn heavy fire from Congress and labor unions since it was unveiled in February.
