DOJ Greenlights $1.4B Southwest-AirTran Combo

Law360, New York (April 26, 2011, 7:17 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice closed its investigation of Southwest Airlines Co.'s $1.4 billion bid for rival discount airline AirTran Holdings Inc. on Tuesday after concluding that the deal wouldn't threaten competition in the airline industry.

The move will allow Dallas-based Southwest to follow through on its recently announced plans to close the stock-and-cash deal on May 2 and turn its attention to winning approval from federal aviation regulators to operate the two airlines as a single entity, the companies said Tuesday.
