DOL Bans Gender Identity, Pregnancy Discrimination

Law360, New York (April 29, 2011, 6:14 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Labor banned discrimination based on gender identity and pregnancy within its workforce Friday, strengthening the agency's protections against sex harassment and discrimination.

In its annual equal employment policy statement, the department for the first time specifically highlighted pregnancy and gender identity-based discrimination as forbidden under its policy of offering equal employment opportunities to all workers and job applicants regardless of their sex, in addition to race, religion and a host of other categories.
