Costa Rica Ex-Prez Gets Five Years For Alcatel Bribes

Law360, New York (April 28, 2011, 9:32 PM EDT) -- Former Costa Rican president Miguel Angel Rodriguez reportedly was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday for taking bribes from France's Alcatel, now part of Alcatel-Lucent, in exchange for a government contract.

The Costa Rican court handling the case also barred Rodriguez, 71, from public office for 12 years after finding him guilty, according to a report in Agence France Presse.

Rosaura Garcia, the lead criminal judge on the second circuit panel in San Jose, called Rodriguez the “main instigator” of the aggravated corruption.
