Big Tobacco Wins $455M Fight Against Mo. Hospitals

Law360, New York (April 29, 2011, 6:54 PM EDT) -- A St. Louis jury found Friday that Lorillard Inc. and five other tobacco giants were not responsible for $455 million in costs that 37 Missouri hospitals claimed they incurred from treating charity and bad-debt patients who were smokers.

Lorillard announced the verdict for the tobacco companies on Friday, saying the jury had been presented with testimony from hospital witnesses confirming that the institutions had not been damaged financially.
