Senate Panel Greenlights Stiffer CWA Penalties

Law360, New York (May 19, 2011, 11:54 AM EDT) -- The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Thursday that would ratchet up criminal penalties for companies and individuals who violate the Clean Water Act, and mandate restitution for the victims of environmental crimes.

The bill, known as the Environmental Crimes Enforcement Act, passed by a 12-3 vote. It will now move to the full U.S. Senate, which failed to act on the bill after the committee passed it the first time in the immediate wake of the Deepwater Horizon accident.
