Settled: Muslim Officer May Wear Skullcap

Law360, New York (May 10, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A Muslim corrections officer may wear a religious skullcap while on duty as part of a settlement with the New York State Department of Correctional Services, which was accused of discrimination by both the employee and the U.S. Department of Justice for not allowing exceptions to its uniform and grooming rules.

The DOJ suit, which could force the DOCS to adopt a broader policy to accommodate the religious observances, practices and beliefs of all its employees, is still pending.
