US Presses To Open Chukchi Sea For Drilling

Law360, New York (May 23, 2011, 5:34 PM EDT) -- U.S. regulators released a revised environmental study Friday as part of a plan to open up Alaska's Chukchi Sea to oil and natural gas development, a move that conservation groups have sharply contested.

The U.S. Minerals Management Service — now known as the Bureau of Ocean Energy, Management, Regulation and Enforcement — first conducted Chukchi Sea lease sales in 2008, but two years later a district court remanded the sales back to the agency for further review under the National Environmental Policy Act.
