Microsoft Threatens Open Source Community

Law360, New York (May 15, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Microsoft Corp. on Monday said that the Linux operating system and other free software providers are infringing 235 of the company’s patents, sparking an outcry in the open-source community.

The announcement marks the first time the software giant has ever made a specific claim against freeware users, and should Microsoft begin litigation, it could sound the death knell to a community that has operated on the assumption that software should be free.
