EU Probes Seagate-Samsung, Western Digital Deals

Law360, New York (May 31, 2011, 1:17 PM EDT) -- The European Union's antitrust watchdog began investigating two billion-dollar deals Monday that would combine the hard drive businesses of four major technology companies based on concerns that the transactions would hinder competition for the key electronics components.

The European Commission opened in-depth probes into Seagate Technology PLC's $1.4 billion cross-licensing agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. — which is designed to combine the hard disk drive operations of the two companies — and Western Digital Technologies Inc.'s $4.3 billion acquisition of Hitachi Ltd.'s storage technology unit....
