Judge Splits Chevron's $18B Amazon Pollution Fight

Law360, New York (June 1, 2011, 1:40 PM EDT) -- A New York federal judge decided Tuesday to split off Chevron Corp.'s claim that an Ecuadorean court's $18 billion judgment against it for alleged pollution is unenforceable, after earlier deciding to merely bifurcate the claim for expedited discovery and trial.

Chevron has accused the Ecuadorean claimants and their New York lawyer, Steven Donziger, of conspiring to wage a global extortion campaign against the company by pressuring judges and politicians in Ecuador and releasing a documentary alleging that Texaco Inc. dumped crude oil in the Amazon decades...
