FDA Plans Transformation In Face Of Globalization

Law360, New York (June 20, 2011, 3:37 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Monday it would closely collaborate with its foreign counterparts to heighten global oversight and tackle skyrocketing imports of FDA-regulated products.

The agency plans to transform its operations after seeing shipments of FDA-regulated imports quadruple from 6 million in 2000 to 24 million this year.

Imports comprise nearly two-thirds of the fruits and vegetables consumed in the U.S., half of all medical devices used across the country and 80 percent of active pharmaceutical ingredients in medications sold here, according to...
