Transgender Court Clerk Sues Ore. For Coverage Denial

Law360, New York (June 21, 2011, 10:06 PM EDT) -- A transgender court clerk sued the state of Oregon on Tuesday after being denied insurance coverage for necessary medical surgeries because of his gender identity, claiming the public health care plan violates a state discrimination law.

Alec Esquivel, 41, a Oregon Court of Appeals clerk who was born a woman, was denied insurance coverage for a hysterectomy and an oophorectomy, the removal of ovaries, according to the complaint.
